Boot-critical driver settings are reset to their default values. Device log files are purged. The Dell ImageAssist tool automates the process for you and describes how to remove the drivers. When running ImageAssist, the validation checker will detect software and drivers to be removed so SysPrep can generalize our image like shown below.
I have been struggling getting some 3G USB modems and some other hardware to work and in the process I have managed to get a lot of unnecessary and just plain wrong drivers installed. This is causing my system and other hardware to work incorrectly. I would like to remove all the drivers on this system and have windows reinstall all the default drivers.
Can I do this with a Windows 7 repair install or how else can I get rid off all the current drivers.

I would recommend that you do a clean reinstall of Windows 7, that way you can wipe all of the old drivers, and Windows 7 will automatically reinstall the default drivers needed (for the most part).
Obviously, it is not possible to remove all of the drivers in an operating system, because it will break the OS permanently, thus a clean reinstall is pretty much the only way to go...

You can use sysprep tool for that. Just run it from
PomaPomac:windowssystem32sysprepsysprep.exe
, check Generalize
and hit OK87244 gold badges1313 silver badges2424 bronze badges
Removing ALL drivers will damage windows and make your life horrible!Your are better off selectively removing the drivers.
Boot from Windows 7 DVDSelect Repair and command prompt
If instead of a wim file your working with an offline copy of windows substitute the path that has the windows folder on it for c:testoffline. When in the command prompt mode from the windows 7 DVD your drive letter may not be the same. Also with an offline copy of windows dism /Mount-Image maybe skipped.
This is all that is require on a offline version of windows.
Lists all drivers
feed the list one at a time into the remove command below. It is only necessary to mount once, not once per driver.
You create an empty folder called test and within that another empty folder called offline. The wim file will be mounted to that folder.
Does Sysprep Remove Drivers Free
Remove a specific driver from the image. Multiple drivers can be removed on one command line. For example, type:
Removing a boot-critical driver package can make the offline Windows image unbootable
Adding drivers also has a command

EDIT: I was trying this as well:http://www.todo-backup.com/support/tutorial/redeploy-system-to-dissimilar-hardware.htm
EDIT: I tried sysprep but on bootup I see the Windows logo then the system crashes. I can stick the drive back in the old hardware and it runs fine.

Use sysprep to remove your drivers and prepare Windows to be moved to another machine, that's a windows feature specially meant to avoid this kind of incident.
You should pick up OBBE experience and check the generalised option when you have to choose parameters.
Edit: Sysprep shouldn't keep showing the setup menu at every boot, but you need to complete it at least one time, it shouldn't annoy you then.
If the setup menu problem persists then remove your drivers manually from the computer manager, you can do this from the device manager in the computer manager, then moving your disk to your new computer and manually check for drivers from this same computer manager.

Delete the old drivers while still running on the old machine.
When deployed on your new machine, install the new drivers. This must be done on the new machine because many driver installers depend on detection of the hardware they are meant for, so that will fail otherwise.
It is important to delete the old drivers as they could conflict with the new drivers.
Also, do not move your driver folder over to the new system. Download the new drivers from the manufacturers website instead.

Sysprep is only half the solution. Use sysprep, boot to WinPE and then copy an image using DISM to USB or LAN. Apply that image to new PC. Done and Done. Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.
